Michigan’s Problem with PFAS

How serious is Michigan’s problem with PFAS?

A running sink | PFAS water filter Michigan

PFAS contamination has decreased in Michigan since its height in 2018, but the PFAS that were introduced are likely still around considering PFAS are known as forever chemicals – it takes a very long time for them to be removed from the ecosystem.

There are currently 245 sites in Michigan where PFAS have been detected. “According to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) more than 1.5 million residents have been drinking water contaminated with PFAS and there could be as many as 11,300 potential sites where PFAS may have been used.” This is why the EPA gave Michigan $37 million in February 2023 to address PFAS in drinking water.

Michigan’s History with PFAS

Are you a Michigander?

Are you worried about per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in your water?

You’ve likely heard of PFAS and were told to avoid the foam that accumulates around the shore and in the dams of rivers, but how serious is Michigan’s problem with PFAS?

The Detroit Free Press calls PFAS contamination “Michigan’s biggest environmental crisis in 40 years.” PFAS are a class of chemicals used in the manufacturing of some fabrics, cleaning products, cookware, and more. PFAS are so widespread in the environment that they can be found in the water, air, and even the blood of humans and animals. Here’s a history of PFAS contamination and news in Michigan:

2009 – Wolverine Worldwide dumped PFAS contaminated wastewater into the Rogue River.

2016 – PFAS was found in Ann Arbor drinking water.

2017 – Michigan created the Michigan PFAS Action Response Team.

2018 – It was discovered that a Wixom-based manufacturing plant had been discharging PFAS contaminated water, which eventually entered the Huron River. A “do not eat” fish advisory was implemented.

How to Cut Down on Water Related Costs

Are you trying to conserve water?

A shower head | House water filter

There are small steps you can take to reduce the amount of water you use and save money! Here are some activities you can do in the shower to conserve water:

Take Shorter Showers: By reducing your shower time by just 4 minutes, you can save around 4,000 gallons a year!

Use an Efficient Shower Head: A modern shower head will run at a rate of 2.5 Gallons Per Minute (GPM), meaning you’ll use 25 gallons for a 10-minute shower. Older shower heads may have an even higher GPM, which wastes water. ProOne Water Filter shower head filters run at 2 GPM, saving you at least 5 gallons for a 10-minute shower, which adds up over time! Shop our shower head filters

Be Prepared with a ProOne Water Filter Pitcher

ProOne water filters can help remove some of the potential bacteria in your water supply. The ProOne G2.0 filter can remove:

A pot on a stove | Water filter pitchers

Microbiological Contaminants (Bacteria)

  • Total coliform - 99.999%
  • Escherichia coli - 99.999%
  • Fecal Coliform - 99.999%
  • Klebsiella pneumoniae - 99.999%
  • Cryptosporidium, Giardia lamblia (polystyrene Microsphere) - 99.999%

The ProOne/Coldstream filter can remove:

  • Rotavirus - 99.7%

Filtering water can reduce the bacteria and viruses, but it shouldn’t be your only line of defense. Water filters can’t kill the contaminants that remain. The only way to kill these contaminants is to boil the water for one minute.

It’s rare the contaminant that caused the boil water advisory is revealed to the public, so don’t take a chance. To remove as many contaminants as possible, filter your water and then boil it.

What makes ProOne different from other water filter pitchers?

In traditional water filter pitchers, the filter sits in the filtered water, potentially allowing cross-contamination of your drinking water. The unique design of the ProOne Water Filter Pitcher positions the filter upright in the container, out of the filtered water, eliminating the potential for cross-contamination and ensuring the purest possible drinking water.

Can Water Filters Help During a Boil Water Advisory?

Has a boil water advisory been issued for your location?

A person with a pot on a stove | Water filter pitchers

What does that mean?

A boil water advisory is a notice issued by your local public health department or government notification advising customers to boil tap water before consuming due to possible contamination by pathogens. During a boil water advisory, the CDC recommends using bottled water or boiled tap water for much of your water use.

A boil water advisory could last for several days or even weeks depending on what’s causing the issue. Think of all the money you’ll have to spend on bottled water for cleaning and cooking!

Visit ProOne independent lab reports for details on other contaminant reductions.

Filtering water can help reduce bacteria and viruses, but it shouldn’t be your only line of defense. Boil your water for at least one minute or longer as recommended by your local water or health department and allow to cool down before use.
