The Difference Between Gravity and Pitcher Water Filters

Is it time to replace your current water filter system?

Are you unsure about what the real differences are between a pitcher and a gravity system?

While both serve the common goal of purifying water, they operate on distinct mechanisms and offer unique advantages. Understanding the differences between these filtration systems can help you make informed decisions regarding your water filtration needs.

Take Action for Safer Drinking Water

Do you want to make sure you and your family have access to clean water?

Unsure of the steps required to get there?

Consumer Reports emphasizes the importance of proactively addressing water quality concerns.

Here are some steps you can take:

Gravity Water Filter
Water Testing: Regularly test your water for contaminants, especially if you rely on well water or live
in an area with a history of water quality issues.

Water Filtration: Invest in water filtration systems that target specific contaminants. Choose systems certified to meet industry standards for effectively reducing harmful substances.

Plumbing Inspection: Assess the plumbing in your home, particularly if it's an older property. Replace lead pipes and fixtures to help minimize the risk of lead contamination.

Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about the water quality in your area. Consumer Reports suggests checking your local water utility's annual water quality report for information on contaminants and their concentrations.

Understanding Water Contaminants

Have you ever wondered why people filter their water?

Wondering what more might be lingering in your drinking water?

The Consumer Reports article outlines various contaminants that can compromise the safety of your drinking water. Some of these include:

Gravity Water Filters
Lead: A notorious and harmful contaminant, lead can leach into water from plumbing materials. It is
especially concerning as even low levels of exposure can have potentially severe health effects, particularly in children.

Arsenic: This naturally occurring element can seep into groundwater, posing potential health risks.

PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances): Commonly found in products like nonstick cookware and firefighting foam, PFAS can contaminate water sources and has been linked to various health problems.

Chlorine and Disinfection Byproducts: While chlorine is often used to disinfect water, its byproducts can have adverse health effects. These byproducts are formed when chlorine reacts with organic matter in water.

Evaluating Your PFAS Water Filter Performance

Do you already own a PFAS water filter?

Looking for an upgrade?

There’s a lot to consider when evaluating a PFAS water filter, but a couple things should be non-negotiable.

PFAS Removal /Reduction

The first thing to check is whether the water filter has been independently tested for PFAS removal. Look for lab reports from organizations like NSF International,  Water Quality Association (WQA) or even IAPMO or its affiliates to show the effectiveness in PFAS reduction.

Filter Lifespan

Understand the filter's lifespan or capacity. Filters have a limited capacity to remove contaminants, and their effectiveness diminishes over time. Look for filters that are easy to replace and reasonably priced.

What Contaminants Can Affect Water's Taste?

Does your water taste off?

A woman drinking a glass of water | Gravity water filters

Do you think contaminants are to blame?

Common contaminants that affect water’s taste include:

Pesticides – Used to kill insects and other pests to promote agriculture, pesticides can give water a chemical taste. Pesticides can enter your water through runoff or can seep into the water supply directly if used near your well.

Calcium, Potassium, Magnesium – These minerals are known as the “good minerals” because they’re minerals humans need. In large amounts, they can provide a metallic or soapy taste.

Chlorine and Other Disinfectants – Chlorine is a gas used to disinfect and kill bacteria and can be used to disinfect water. Chlorinating city water is common. Chlorine or other disinfectants can make your water smell or taste like a swimming pool.

Is Filtered Water Best for Pets?

Wondering if filtered water is really the best choice to give your pet?

A dog drinking water | countertop water filter

You have a lot of options when it comes to treating your drinking water. If you’re like many pet owners, you’ll also be thinking about what is best not only for you, but for your pet. The truth is, filtered water is a great option for the whole family, including pets. Check out the top two reasons filtered water tops the list for drinking water solutions.

  1. Contaminant Free - Contaminants like heavy metals, excessive mineral content, and even bacteria aren’t ideal for drinking water. Certain contaminants in your tap or well water may be present at levels that are perfectly safe for humans, but not so for dogs, cats, and other pets. Water filtration systems reduce contaminant levels to make your water safe and healthy for everyone.
  2. Essential Nutrients - High mineral levels in water, or hard water, aren’t the best for your pet. Yet, the minerals we get from healthy drinking water are essential nutrients for us and our pets. So, processes that remove all minerals, like distillation and reverse osmosis, leave us with water that’s less than perfect. ProOne filters help keep a healthy level of minerals, like calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

Improve Pet Hydration with Filtered Water

Not sure if the benefits of filtered water are worth it for your pet?

A cat drinking water | countertop water filter

No one questions the importance of water. But recently, water quality is a hot topic around the country. There are a lot of options for people to make sure they’re drinking the best water. But what about our pets? Filtered water is the best choice to improve your pet’s hydration and more!

Taste

Filtered water tastes amazing. The great taste will encourage your pet to drink more and maintain a healthier level of hydration. Good hydration is important especially in the hot summer weather!

Healthy Skin

Chlorine and high mineral content in tap or well water can dry out your pet’s skin. This can be especially irritating to animals with any kind of skin issues or allergies. Filtered water, on the other hand, will have much less chlorine and a better balance of minerals. This is optimal for healthy skin and coats. Bathing your pets with filtered water will take these benefits even further.

Common PFAS Contaminants

Have you heard of PFAS?

countertop water filtration system

Forever chemicals, also called PFAS (poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances), are chemicals found in everyday items, such as makeup, cookware, clothing, and industrial materials.

The PFAS class is made of over 9,000 chemicals! Here are some of the common chemicals:

PFOA – Perfluorooctanoic acid. PFOA is the most common type of PFAS. It’s used in carpeting, clothing, sealants, and more.

PFOS – Perfluorooctanesulfonic acid. PFOS was a key ingredient in fabric protectors and is used for its stain-repellant properties.

PFOA and PFOS aren’t allowed in US products anymore, but imported goods still use them.

PFBS – Perfluorobutanesulfonic acid. PFBS is a short chain PFAS, meaning it breaks down easier than traditional PFAS. It’s used as a replacement for PFOS.

PFBA – Perfluorobutanoic acid. PFBA is used in advanced chemistry.

PFNA – Perfluorononanoic acid. PFNA is used to decrease surface tension between two types of matter and can be found in plastics.

ProOne water filters are tested for these PFAS class contaminants and can help reduce them! Learn how well PFAS can be removed on our website!

How Do Pressure Water Filter Systems Compare to Reverse Osmosis?

Do you want to improve the quality of your home’s water?

A person filling up a green glass with water from a sink | Countertop reverse osmosis system

How do reverse osmosis systems compare to ProOne’s pressure systems?

Reverse osmosis systems require a pre-sediment filter to remove larger particles. These filters can easily get gunked up your R.O. system periodically needs to be disinfected. Rather than spend time cramped under your sink fiddling with the filter, you could enjoy the ease of ProOne systems! The ProOne/Coldstream Countertop Water Filter comes with pre-sediment filter installed, is cleanable/reusable, and doesn’t require disinfection. You’re expected to get up to 2600 gallons of clean water per filter!

Minerals give water its great taste. Reverse osmosis systems often filter out even these healthy minerals, giving the water a flat taste. ProOne pressure systems leave small amounts of the good minerals like potassium, sodium, and calcium so you can feel refreshed with every sip!
